The requirements are as follows:
- Receive up to $500 in emergency assistance for your electricity bill ($600 if your home is heated electrically) and $500 for your natural gas bills.
- Advocacy on your behalf with your electricity or natural gas provider to pause any further disconnection or collection activity on your account until a decision is reached.
- The LEAP program does not assist with Water/Sewer arrears.
What information and/or documents do you need to provide?
- Provide your electricity bill.
- Names and birthdates of all the residents in your home as registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
- Social Insurance Numbers (SINs), Individual Tax Numbers or temporary taxation numbers for all household members who are 18 and older.
- Proof of household income.
Who can apply?
- The owner of an electricity account.
- People who live in homes with sub-meters (apartments, condos, co-ops and trailers).
- If your home has electric heat, or you rely on certain medical devices requiring a lot of power, the OESP offers a higher level of assistance.
- Lower-income Indigenous Ontarians also qualify for a higher level of assistance
How can I apply?
There are 3 ways to apply:
- Apply on Online at: ca (hyperlink) and mail the consent form to the address on the OESP website. (The CRA needs your consent to verify your income.). This is the fastest way to apply.
- Apply on Paper – Complete the application and sign the consent forms (The CRA needs your consent to verify your income.). Mail them back to the address on the OESP website. You can download the documents from OntarioElectricitySupport.ca
- Apply through an Intake Agency: Contact The Help Centre at 905-372-2646 or 1-888-698-3382 and we will help you with your application at no cost.
NOTE:
If you have not filed an income tax return recently, or if your situation has changed since you last filed your taxes, you must apply for OESP through an intake agency.
